This year, China plans to plant 82.2 million mu (Chinese measure unit equal to about 0.0667 hectares)of trees to realise a total output value of 1.4 trillion yuan in the forestry sector. This will pave the way for realising the target of 20% of forest coverage rate due in 2010.
China has launched a comprehensive and coordinated promotion of an ecological forestry sector, focused on the forest ecological system, according to Jia Zhibang, head of the State Forestry Administration.
In 2008, China completed forestation of 71.57 million mu, an increase of 22.1% from the previous year, and formed new areas of growth, including bio-energy forests, carbon sink forests and cultivating valuable tree species. A total of 2.31 billion trees were planted in voluntary forestation efforts.
To date, 49% of the nation's natural wetlands as well as 90% of terrestrial ecosystems and bio-diversity are under effective protection.
In key provinces including Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia, the total area of desertified land that has been brought under control is noticeably greater than the areas where desertification has expanded. The spread of desertification in the Kerchin, Mo Us desert and Hunshandak deserts has been reversed.
The planting of trees in cities has been consistently promoted and the urban green coverage rate nationwide has reached 35.1%.
