According to the manager of the China National Petroleum pipeline construction project, the second pipeline of the West-East Gas Transmission Project is progressing smoothly. At present, more than 880 kilometers of the Xinjiang section has been completed, which is more than half of the 1,342-kilometer total length.
The second pipeline of the West-East Gas Transmission Project is China's first major energy artery to transfer natural gas resources from outside its borders. The project stretches from Horgos Port in Xinjiang in the west, to Guangzhou in the south, and to Shanghai in the east, passing through 14 provinces, regions and cities.
The trunk pipeline and eight branch pipelines have a combined total length of 9,102 kilometers, with a total investment of about 142 billion yuan and a designed gas transfer capacity of 30 billion cubic meters per year.
The construction began on February 22 of this year. And the total length is divided into two sectors of 2441km and 2477km, with Zhongwei of Ningxia serving as the dividing point.
It is estimated that by the end of 2009, the second pipeline project will connect with the Central Asia Natural Gas Pipeline that is currently under construction. The second pipeline project will be fully operational in 2012.
It will allow natural gas produced in Xinjiang, China and natural gas imported from Central Asia to be transported to gas markets in the Yangtze River Delta region, the Pearl River Delta region as well as the western regions along the pipeline, providing a stable gas supply for more than 30 years.
