French President Nicolas Sarkozy met with the Dalai Lama in Warsaw on December 6th, despite China’s repeated persuasions and solemn representations. The Elysee Palace defended its position, saying that the meeting had no special intentions.

Sarkozy’s move was extremely unwise as it severely hurt the feelings of the Chinese people and damaged Sino-French relations. This was a farce that has harmed political credibility, the People’s Daily commented. When the head of a major power becomes a capricious character in the international arena, not only will the international community question his personal political stature, the reputation of his own country is also likely to be greatly damaged.

Internet users have also actively commented on this issue, saying that Sarkozy must pay for his erroneous actions!

The manipulative actions of this political clown Sarkozy have reversed the hard-won and long-term friendly cooperative relationship between China and France. He must pay for his actions.

Here are some comments from Chinese netizens:

The so-called “Tibet Issue” is totally an internal affair of China and any irresponsible comments by countries will not be tolerated. Chinese government must take more forceful measures to make them understand that any actions that might violate China’s fundamental interests will result in serious consequences.

Sarkozy’s actions are provocative and dangerous. We should stick to the existing policies and be tougher!

There is only one China. Any attempt to split China is doomed to fail. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the lives of the Chinese people are becoming better off and the standard of living improving. With the successful spacewalk carried out by the Shenzhou 7 taikonauts and the splendid Beijing Olympic Games, China has already demonstrated its strength to the world. The political farce meeting by Sarkozy and the Dalai Lama will harm the Sino-French ties, and Sarkozy will reap what he has sown..

I support the stand of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and any foreign leader’s contact with Dalai Lama is interfering with China's internal affairs. The Chinese people are firmly opposed to such an act!

What Sarkozy has done once again reminds the Chinese people of the fact that some major Western powers do not hope China to be strong. They will always wish China to be a poor and backward country with no rights to speak in the international arena.

The rise of China inevitably causes the jealousy of some people! We need to redouble our efforts. That is the best way to react.
