Road accidents in China killed 7,276 people and injured 23,844 others in November, police said on Thursday, as they warned motorists against risky road conditions during the winter.
There were 22,087 accidents last month, down 20 percent year-on-year, said the Traffic Management Bureau under the Ministry of Public Security. However, casualties only fell by 6.5 percent.
Losses from road accidents reached 63 million yuan (7.6 million U.S. dollars), dropping 36.6 percent.
The police said driver fatigue, speeding and illegal parking on highways were among the top causes of fatal accidents. For example, the number of deaths caused by speeding rose 21.4 percent year-on-year.
County and township-level roads, whose conditions are usually worse than main thoroughfares, became more deadly as fatalities on those roads, totaling 1,860 people, rose by 12.9 percent.
