Seven car accidents caused by heavy smog killed six people and injured seven others in China's eastern Jiangsu Province early on Wednesday, a local public security official said.

The accidents occurred at about 3 a.m. on the Ningsuxu Highway in Sihong County, Suqian City, as localized smog shrouded a 3 km section of the road, the official said.

Six people died at the scene. The seven injured were taken to local hospitals.

Liu Yajun, vice mayor and head of the Public Security Bureau of Suqian, went to the scene to oversee rescue efforts and traffic control.
