Guangzhou plans to extend the metro service to cover 230 kilometers by the opening of the 2010 Asian Games, likely placing it among the world's top ten largest subway service operators. Guangzhou Metro also has a plan to build a total of 20 lines covering 500 kilometers by 2020.
At present, Guangzhou Metro receives a passenger flow volume of over 1.6 million on average per day. Its rate of on-time departures reaches over 99.8%, earning the highest service satisfaction rating of all Guangdong Province's public transportation channels.
According to reports, Guangzhou Metro Line 2 is the nation's first line to have 70% of its equipment produced domestically. Its Line 3 is China's fastest subway line and Line 4, adopting the linear motor mode, is the world's most responsive subway line. Guangzhou is the first city in Chinese mainland to install platform screen doors and a rigid catenary in its subway system.
Since the first segment of Guangzhou Metro Line 1 was launched in June 1997, Guangzhou has opened Lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 over the 11-year period, covering 116 kilometers with 66 stations.
