Xinhua Net reported that by 2020， China's aging population would reach 248 million, making up 17.17% of the entire population. By 2050, the aging population will increase to 400 million, more than 30% of the total population.
According to Li Bengong, president of China's Association of Gerontology, the aging population is growing rapidly as health conditions improve and life expectancy increases. There are more and more centenarians. China had a noticeably aging society beginning in 1999; and this grew to 153 million people above sixty in 2007, making up 11.8% of the country's population. What's more, places such as Yongfu, Pengshan, Mayang, Zhongxiang and Sanshui have become famous as "longevity hometowns" for those truly advanced in their years. Statistics show that there are more than 130,000 centenarians in the world.
