From January 23, within 40 days time, the national passenger volume is expected to exceed 2.37 billion; and the transportation sector is facing the world's largest influx of a mobile population.
Highway passengers surpass 52 million for the first time
On January 23, the first day of the Spring Festival travel season, China was expected to accommodate 52.5 million passengers on its roads - an increase of 6%.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, students are leaving earlier this year; and the "student flow," and "migrant worker's flow" coincided. Compared with last year, on the first day of the Spring Festival travel season, passenger traffic has increased drastically. In order to meet current demands, 760,000 trains have been operating; and transportation is in good order.
The head of the Ministry of Transportation said that in provinces such as Guizhou, Shaanxi, Hunan, and Hubei, heavy snow, low temperatures, and icy roads have put pressure on traffic.
The main highway and trunk highway in the provinces of Tianjin, Hebei, Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, and Shaanxi have resumed service; and in some sections of Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Anhui, Hubei, and Hunan, roads were again closed due to the 22nd night of icy roads. In most parts of Guizhou, the highway pavement has frozen from freezing rain; with a period of access in the daytime; and in the evening, it is closed to all traffic.
He Jianzhong, spokesman of the Ministry of Transportation said that the volume of passengers on the road is forecasted to reach 2.15 billion during this year's Spring Festival travel season – an increase of about 5 percent; and sets a new record. National sea transportation passenger volume will reach 29.5 million - an increase of approximately 3 percent.
