Three people have died and 31 others were injured, including seven seriously injured, in a stampede triggered by sales promotion in a Carrefour outlet in southwest China Saturday.
The promotion was launched to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the outlet in the Shapingba District, Chongqing Municipality.
On Saturday morning, throngs of people crowded at the entrance trying to squeeze into the shop, and a mass stampede took place, said Gao Chang, a spokesman for the government of Shapingba District.
The injured people are being treated in four hospitals in the city.
"The outlet has been ordered to suspend operation and the work safety watchdog has started an investigation," said Gao.
