The 2009 Chinese Social Networking Sites Research Report, released by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) Nov. 11, 2009, suggests that by the end of 2009, the total number of social networking sites (SNS) users including the famous kaixin and renren sites will reach 124 million, making up nearly one third of total net users. Among them, 42.4 percent claimed that they registered just to kill time.

According to the data, there are thousands of SNS nationwide, and that number is growing quickly. The number of SNS users also increased rapidly along with it. CNNIC estimates that by the end of 2009, the total numbers of SNS users will reach 124 million.

SNS users are becoming much younger. The report shows that young people between 20 to 29 years old are very active on SNSs, accounting for 52.6 percent of total users, way higher than other age groups. Students and professionals make up the majority of users; making up 50.3 percent and 31.1percent of its total number. This is because young people like to embrace new things and are more interested in learning and sharing.

Another obvious trend is that more well-educated people are becoming fans of SNS. The data shows that more than 59.1 percent of SNS users hold an associate degree or above.

However, entertainment and online gaming are still the main attraction for SNS users. About 42.4 percent said they logged in to kill time and 27.4 percent for online gaming.
