According to Xinhua Net, Fujian Province recently launched the construction of a Supercomputer Center operating at 2.5 trillion calculations per second. The project is part of Fujian Province's "11th Five-Year Plan" (2006-2010), with a special focus on science, education, and information technology projects.
The project will be taken on by Xiamen University, Fuzhou University, and other units; and is expected to be built and ready for use in June this year. The Supercomputer Center will first develop four numerical systems of weather prediction, earthquake monitoring and forecasting, network behavior analysis and quantum chemical calculations.
A super computer is indicates the overall strength of the economy; and is the embodiment of the tech industry's competitive strength. At present, the fastest Chinese-made super computer in operation is the 10 trillion Dawning 4000 A which was based in Shanghai Super Computing Center in 2004.
