Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang on Wednesday called for strengthened efforts to train more high-caliber special police and facilitate the building of a modernized armed force.

During an inspection tour at the special police college of the People's Armed Police in Beijing, Zhou called for independent innovation and better use of advanced technology to improve the special police's combat effectiveness.

Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also stressed the importance of strengthening China's anti-terrorism capability.

Efforts should be made to guard against and crack down on violent crimes and terrorism effectively as they pose a threat to people's safety and seriously jeopardize social stability, said Zhou.
