A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has urged the nation's judicial authorities to address complex social conflicts and uphold social stability in a timely and practical manner.

Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the CPC Central Committee's Commission for Political and Legal Affairs, made the remarks at a plenary meeting of the commission on Friday, according to a statement of the meeting on Saturday.

Zhou, also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, urged members of procuratorial, judicial and public security organs to carefully study the speech delivered by President Hu Jintao on Friday at a grand gathering marking the 90th founding anniversary of the CPC.

They should thoroughly analyze and understand Hu's comments on current situations and stay sober-minded of the complex nature of social conflicts and daunting challenges of maintaining stability, he said.

Zhou called on the judicial sector to make efforts to address social conflicts, innovate in the area of social management and ensure that law enforcement is conducted in a "just and clean" manner.

He said judicial authorities should safeguard the Party's rule with concrete actions, as well as maintain China's long-term stability and uphold social justice.
