Top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday called for more efforts to expand domestic demand, boost consumption and reduce energy usage in order to enhance the country's economic development.

The "urgent and arduous nature" of transforming the country's economic growth pattern should be fully realized and the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) should have a "good start" this year, said Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body.

Jia made the statement during a speech at the closing session of a four-day plenum of the CPPCC National Committee.

He called for more efforts to develop the agricultural, service and non-public sectors.

Effort should also be made to strengthen environmental protection by improving the conservation of forests, grasslands and wetlands and boosting the development of the country's marine economy, said Jia, who is also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

He said efforts should be made to improve people's livelihoods, innovate in the area of social management and meet people's cultural demands.

Jia said the political advisory body's "public diplomacy" efforts should be promoted in order to "increase foreigners' understanding toward China's conditions, values and development."
