A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in charge of legal affairs Friday said the proposed revision of the country's criminal and civil procedural laws should balance human rights protection with crime-fighting.
Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the CPC Central Committee's Commission for Political and Legal Affairs, made the remark at a meeting of the commission.
The revision of the two laws is necessary and should be carried out in an active and steady manner, said Zhou, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
Zhou said revisions should facilitate efficient settlement of social disputes and conflicts and help improve the efficiency of the judicial system for the people.
He also urged tightened supervision over every aspect of legal procedures and promotion of law enforcement featuring justice and honesty.
Input from related sides should be solicited so to ensure the revised laws fit realities and can be easily implemented, he added.
Also at the meeting, Zhou heard reports on the debt issues faced by local political and legal organs in fields of infrastructure construction.
Besides demanding substantial measures be made to solve the debt issues, Zhou said the political and legal organs should conduct their work in a cost-saving way.
