Chinese clothing companies should step up industrial restructuring and product innovation to become more competitive and sustainable, Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang said in Beijing Tuesday.

Zhang made the remarks while visiting the ongoing 19th China International Clothing & Accessories Fair in Beijing.

"The Chinese clothing industry faces severe challenges as it lacks innovation and world-famous brands, and most products have low added value," he said.

He said Chinese garment firms must endeavor to establish independent brands, increase investment in research and design, maintain strict quality control to ensure stable quality and step up product marketing globally.
