Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Friday called on members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and officials to learn from a late veteran Party official who was remembered for his selfless contribution to the public interest.

CPC members, and officials including those who have retired from their posts, should learn from Yang Shanzhou, who lived up to the moral pursuits of a CPC member by his selflessness, hard work and clean work style, Xi said.

Born in 1927, Yang Shanzhou served as the former Party chief of Baoshan City of Yunnan Province in southwest China. After his retirement in 1988, he declined an offer to live in Kunming, the provincial capital where he could spend the rest of his life in comfort.

After retirement, joined by his family and local people, Yang spent more than 20 years cultivating a tree farm which eventually had a forest coverage reaching 3,733 hectares. In April 2009 Yang donated the tree farm to the government.

Yang died of illness in October 2010.
