Senior Chinese leader stresses economic restructuring, innovation

Senior Chinese official He Guoqiang has urged eastern Zhejiang Province to take the lead in the nation's economic restructuring and improve business competitiveness.

He, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during a five-day inspection trip to Zhejiang, also the country's export powerhouse, that ended on Tuesday.

Local firms must step up product innovation, create their own name brands to become more competitive internationally and contribute to national economic growth, said He.

He encouraged the development of tourism and other service industries in rural areas in line with local conditions to help farmers find new sources of income growth.

He, also head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the Party's internal anti-graft body, called for greater efforts to stem corruption to safeguard the country's reform, development and stability.
