A senior Chinese official Friday called for taking precautions against serious criminal cases and accidents ahead of the New Year's Day and Spring Festival holidays.

Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, told a conference that the year end and the beginning of a new year was always a time of frequent criminal activities and accidents.

Zhou ordered "strengthened crackdown on criminal cases, especially those relating to property," and "tightened security measures in public places."

"China was in a period with both strategic opportunities for economic and social development, and social conflicts," said Zhou, who also heads the Committee of Political Science and Law under the CPC Central Committee.

He said political science and law departments should address problems threatening social harmony and stability, prevent social conflicts from the source and timely resolve conflicts, and further improve credibility of law enforcement to safeguard social justice.
