Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for enhancing democratic consultation in actively coping with the international financial crisis so as to "maintain a stable and relatively fast economic development."

Xi said local government departments should "pay close attention to economic trends home and abroad," investigate influence of the financial crisis and find out possible obstacles to maintaining economic growth.

Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the statement at a meeting of learning and practicing the "scientific outlook on development."

He called for enhancing the role of opinions from the public to thoroughly explore different ideas.
