Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has underscored the role of the working class in ensuring the country's economic growth and social stability amid the financial crisis.
"People of the working class should be the main force in ensuring economic growth, promoting living standards and social stability, and welcome the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China with their achievements," Xi said at a meeting in Beijing to award outstanding workers ahead of International Labor Day.
Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, hailed the contribution of thousands of model workers since the founding of the New China.
"All kinds of work are glorious and deserve the respect of the whole of society. The Party and people will always remember them, and they will always have their place in the country's history," he said.
In addition, Xi urged labor unions at all levels to "positively safeguard the benefits of all employees" and called on Party committees to create better working environments for them.
