Chinese President Hu Jintao called for stepped up efforts in turning China into an innovation-oriented country here on Monday.

Hu made the remarks when delivering a speech at a conference marking the 50th founding anniversary of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST).

The president first expressed appreciation and respect to all Chinese scientists and those who work for the CAST, for their contribution towards the country's scientific development.

Hu said the galloping science and technology had become a key factor in the fierce competition in overall national strength among countries in the world.

The development of China and the Communist Party of China needs strong scientific and technological support, as well as self-innovation in the field of science and technologies, to turn China into an innovation-oriented country, he said.
