Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, called on Wednesday for strengthening the development of the CPC in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in a substantial way.

The CPC must turn its political and organizational advantages into the drive of scientific development and strengthen party building in the army, said Hu.

He made the comments while meeting with a group of CPC chiefs of major military units who were attending a workshop here.

Hu, who is also state president and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), expressed gratitude and respect to the armed forces for their important contributions to the success of the Olympics and Paralympics.

In his speech, Hu highlighted the importance of party building, calling it the basis and key for the entire work of the PLA.

Also present were other CMC members including Guo Boxiong, Xu Caihou, Liang Guanglie, Li Jinai and Liao Xilong.
