Heavy rain is expected to saturate the drought-hit provinces of central and southern China, according to the country's weather forecast department.

A rainstorm alert was issued at 6 p.m. Friday by the China Meteorological Administration, forecasting heavy rains in southeast Chongqing Municipality and the provinces of Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangxi and Zhejiang.

Experts say the rain should ease drought currently affecting the lower and middle reaches of the Yangtze River.
