China hoped to further cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a senior Chinese official said here on Friday.
Zhang Rongming, vice chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, said this when she met with Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, the UNFPA executive director Friday.
China has made great achievements in various fields, especially the population and development sector during the past 60 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, Zhang said.
She noted, however, that China is still confronted with the stress of population, resources and environment.
She said that China is willing to further cooperation with the UNFPA to work for the achievement of the targets contained in the Program of Action that countries adopted at the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of promises to eradicate extreme poverty and its root causes by 2015.
Thoraya Ahmed Obaid spoke highly of the cooperation between China and the UNFPA over the past 30 years and expressed the willingness to work with China to promote the South-South cooperation.
