Chen Zhili, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, vice-president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and mayor of the Beijing Olympic (Paralympic) Village, received the "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)" award from Henry Paulson, Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, representing the U.S. Green Building Council on August 13, 2008.
Chen Zhili said the Beijing Olympics sufficiently demonstrates a "Green Olympics, Hi-tech Olympics and Humanistic Olympics." Beijing Olympic Village's reception of such an award affirmed the cooperation between China and the United States in the field of clean energy technology.
Chen hopes the exchange and cooperation between the two countries will be enlarged, especially in research and technology transfer as well as promoting energy-saving and emission-reduction technology.
Henry Paulson congratulated the Beijing Olympic Village on wining the award. He remarked that the Beijing Olympics is the most environment-friendly Olympics so far in history.
The LEED, awarded to the Beijing Olympic Village, indicates the efforts and achievements made by the two countries in cooperation on clean energy technology and building a green Olympics.
The U.S. Green Building Council established the LEED Green Building Rating System and the LEED. Both have a widespread influence on world architecture.
