Bangladesh Confucius Institute at North-South University held a big party here Saturday to celebrate Chinese Spring Festival.
Khaliquzzaman M Elias, director of Confucius Institute, said at the party the institute has been developing steadily ever since it was established two years ago.
He hoped the institute will attract more Bangladeshis to learn Chinese in the future.
Vice-Chancellor of North-South University Hafiz GA Siddiqu said China is developing so fast and is gradually becoming an economic power in the world.
"Many Bangladeshi businessmen are doing business with China. If they know Chinese, it will be easy for them to communicate with their Chinese partners," he said.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Zheng Qingdian said Confucius Institute at North-South University is not only a place to teach Chinese, but also a platform for Bangladeshis to know Chinese culture.
China's traditional Lion Dance was performed by Bangladeshi professionals at the party and got a big applause from the audience.
The teachers and students from the Confucius Institute presented wonderful performances, including Chinese pop songs, Bengali folk songs, dances.
North-South University's Confucius Institute is the first Confucius Institute in South Asia. It was co-established by China Yunnan University and Bangladesh North-South University and was inaugurated on Feb. 14, 2006.
