Two Chinese naval vessels on Friday arrived in the southern Spanish port city of Cadiz, marking the first visit to Spain by Chinese warships.

During their five-day visit, more than 500 Chinese officers and sailors aboard the guided missile destroyer Guangzhou and the supply ship Weishanhu will conduct a joint military exercise dubbed "China-Spanish Friendship-2007" with the Spanish Navy.

This is the Chinese Navy's first joint exercise with the Spanish Navy in Spanish waters, which will be focused on joint search and rescue.

Spain is the two Chinese warships' third leg of their 87-day voyage that has already taken them to St. Petersburg, Russia, and Portsmouth, Britain, and will also take them to France.

The navies of China and Spain started the exchange of friendly visits in the 1980s. In March 2003 the Spanish naval training vessel Juan Sebastian De Elcano paid a five-day visit to the Chinese city of Shanghai.
