"There might also be a person who is neither a relative nor lover but trusted by the official," he said.

"The legislature tried to cover all possible relations through the concept of specially-related persons," he said.

However, some observers worry that the new interpretation could result in innocent people being convicted if prosecutors do not make a correct judgement on the relations between them and the officials.

"There are such possibilities. It can''t be ruled out according to the present regulations," said Professor Chu Huaizhi from the Peking University''s law school.

But, since there are very few cases implicating a specially-related person who is neither relative nor lover, it does not seem that the SPC is going to issue a special explanation on it, Chu said.

He suggested that the courts should review these cases, double check the evidence and ensure the defendants can make full use of their right to appeal.
