Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday pledged to follow the examples of China's older revolutionaries to push forward the development of the Party and the country.

"The older generation of revolutionaries led the people to great achievements in the revolution, construction and reform, and other tasks have been left for us to fulfill," said Hu at a symposium on the 100th birth anniversary of Yang Shangkun, China's president from 1988 to 1993, who died in 1998.

"We should strive to build our nation into a rich, democratic, civilized and harmonious socialist country, with efforts focused on maintaining the public's fundamental interests," Hu said.

"Yang was a great proletarian revolutionary, statesman, military strategist, staunch Marxist and outstanding leader of the Party, state and the people's army," he said.

"As a dedicated revolutionary for more than 70 years, Yang devoted all his life to the cause of the Chinese people's liberation and the cause of construction," he said.

"We should learn from his persistent faith, his loyalty to the Party and the people, his courage to pursue the truth and his creativity in exploring new work styles," he added.

Vice President Zeng Qinghong, who presided over the symposium, also expressed the will to carry forward the spirit of China's older generation of revolutionaries to promote the Party's and nation's achievements.
