The Macao police have detained a high-profile government official for embezzling public funds to bet on soccer match, local press reported Wednesday.

The Macao Post Daily quoted police sources as saying that the male suspect, aged 36, allegedly embezzled 230,000 patacas (28,750 U.S. dollars) and was reported by his superiors.

The suspect has worked for 16 years as a public servant, the sources were quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The official, if found guilty of embezzlement, faces a prison term of up to eight years, according to the newspaper.
