After wandering around a shopping mall for nearly two hours, Private Sun Huhujie finally bought a health tonic costing 158 yuan (20.6 U.S. dollars) for his mum.
In a family that owns property worth more than two billion yuan, the present seemed fairly run of the mill.
Smiling bashfully, 22-year-old Sun said, "I think my mother will be very happy with it because it''''s the first time I bought her a birthday present with my own money".
He has been saving up part of his 240 yuan monthly allowance for weeks.
Rich-kid Sun used to think it would be impossible to live on such a meager allowance.
"At that time I didn''''t believe that anyone earned less than about ten thousand yuan a month," Sun said.
But now he is used to it.
The only child of a well-off family, Sun was spoiled by his parents who used to dole him out 5,000 yuan every month. Big spender Sun would lavish the money on computer games, clothes and going out to restaurants with friends.
