The 22nd International Exhibition on Plastics and Rubber Industries (Chinaplas 2008) holds its grand opening today and will for next three days bridge buyers and suppliers at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC), Pudong, Shanghai.

It is expected that 63,000 trade visitors from home and abroad will attend the expo to purchase and scout more than 1,800 advanced machines and a wide array of chemicals and raw materials.

The scale of the Chinaplas convention has increased each year - it is now Asia's No 1 and the world's No 3 plastics and rubber trade fair.

The exhibition area this year has reached a record-breaking 134,500 sq m with over 1,700 exhibitors.

Pavilions displaying innovative products and technology from countries or regions include those from Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Chinese mainland and Taiwan province, the United Kingdom and the United States.

To enable networking ease for visitors and exhibitors, sector-specific zones have been organized as part of the fair, including those for auxiliary and testing equipment, dies and molds, drink and plastic packaging, machinery, chemicals and raw materials, semi-finished products, extrusion machinery and Chinese export machinery and materials.

Professional image

The professional and international image of Chinaplas appeals to suppliers, enabling both past and new entrants to promote their brand and expand sales.

The show now underway has attracted more than 200 new local and foreign companies this year, including renowned enterprises from Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Italy.

Previous exhibitors also demonstrated their support, with more than 500 past participants not only returning, but also increasing the size of their booths by an average of 50 percent over last year's square footage

Among them, the top growth in size of booths came from SABIC, Sumitomo Chemical Asia Pte Ltd, Changzhou Hengli Machinery Co Ltd, Ruian Fengming Machine Co Ltd and Ferromatik Milacron Maschinenbau GmbH.

Many overseas buyer delegations joined the mega fair this year, including groups from Egypt, France, Germany, India, Iran, Indonesia, Jordan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Africa, Sweden, Thailand, UK, Turkey and Vietnam.

Representatives or buyer groups from trade associations in electronics, packaging, building and the plastics industries will also visit the show.

Innovative products, tech

The theme of this Chinaplas 2008 is "Bringing Innovation to Life and Success to Your Business", reflecting the wide use of plastics and rubber in our daily lives, including automotive parts, packaging, building and construction, medical equipment, electronics and electrical appliances other products that are routinely used every day.

Chinaplas 2008 is the first large international plastics and rubber show held following K Fair 2007, the world's top show for the industry, the most current innovation and technology is now on display in China.

Some exhibits are expected to debut new products at Chinaplas 2008, such as Davenport MVPlus Melt Viscometer for PET materials, the Chatillon TCD225 Series Digital Force Tester and the 2000X Series ultrasonic assembly systems.

Carousel Plus dryers made in Shanghai will also be exhibited for the first time together with the EnergySmart drying system.

Fully automatic filtration systems, loaders and small shredders are also exhibited at the fairground.

Unique new image

As Asia's top plastics and rubber trade show, Chinaplas is offering a new look to reflect the show's professionalism and international character. The layout uses icons to represent various sectors that are easily recognized at facilities and displays.

"This year, the on-site design adopted a brand new color and visualized the exhibits of different theme zones with different icons," said Ada Leung, senior sales and marketing manager of Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd, organizer of Chinaplas.

"The new image not only provides a fresh look to visitors, but also strengthens Chinaplas as a professional and international trade fair and enhances the sense of belonging for both exhibitors and visitors."

Concurrent events

The organizer also hosts events to enrich the show. Last year a CEO Forum and a China-India Plastics Industry Summit appealed to both visitors and the media.

This year Adsale joined forces with China Plastics Processing Industry Association and The Society of Plastics Industry Inc to organize a China-US Plastics Industry Summit that was held yesterday. The summit addressed topics on Sino-US market development and exploration of bilateral trading opportunities.

To welcome the Beijing Olympics this August, the show displays sports elements under the theme of "Innovative Plastics and Rubber, Sports without Limit".

The event includes products, sports performances and games such as table tennis, mini-football and mini-golf, demonstrating new applications of plastics and rubber in sports equipment and stadium facilities.
