The relevant analysis and results concerning Beijing's air quality, announced on March 17 by the International Olympic Committee's Medical Commission (IOC MC), revealed that Beijing's air quality in August will not compromise the health of athletes who attend the Olympic Games, according to Xinhua.
The IOC MC said in a statement that during the past few weeks, the IOC MC, in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO)'s relevant standards, analyzed and assessed air quality data (including temperature, humidity, as well as the levels of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone layer and particulate matter) that had been measured and provided by the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau in August of last year. The Medical Council was satisfied with the evaluation results; and concluded that the health of most athletes will not be compromised.
In addition, the statement demonstrates two facts that prove that Beijing's air quality in August is satisfactory.
The first fact is that during the test event held in August of last year, no team doctor reported that an athlete's health problems were related to the air quality to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) or to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The second is that no problems related to the air quality had occurred during the IAAF World Junior Championships held in Beijing in August of 2006.
