Southern African leaders have recommended an economic plan to help Zimbabwe come out of a biting economic malaise, Daily Mail reported on Saturday.

After two days of close-door sessions, the leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) arrived at the decision following a report to the heads of state and government by Executive Secretary Tomaz Salomao.

In a communique read by SADC Deputy Executive Secretary Joao Samuel Caholo at the end of the summit, SADC finance ministers were mandated to draw up the plan in consultation with the government of Zimbabwe.

"The summit took note of the report of the executive secretary on the economic situation in Zimbabwe and mandated the SADC ministers responsible for finance to use the report of the executive secretary in consultation with the government of Zimbabwe and draw up an economic plan to support Zimbabwe," Caholo said.

The summit also recommended that negotiations between Zimbabwe's ruling ZANU-PF and the two factions of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change under the chairmanship of South African President Thabo Mbeki should be expedited to allow Zimbabweans vote in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility during next year's elections.
