The World Food Programme (WFP), The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), announced on July 4th at a joint press conference, that there are currently 854 million hungry people in the world. The situation is most serious in Africa: in the past 15 years, the number of people who are malnourished has increased by 45 million.

In a report from the UN website, David Harcharik, the deputy general director of FAO, says that the global fight against hunger is not hopeful. Harcharik said that regardless of population or absolute figures; the world has not yet met the needs required to achieve the goal of cutting the population of starving people in half by 2015. Although some countries have made progress; overall global hunger still continues to rise rather than fall.

The IFAD noted that although half of the world's population now lives in cities; the population living in poverty is concentrated in rural areas. Therefore, agricultural development, especially that in Sub-Saharan Africa, requires more attention and investment. Otherwise, it will be difficult for other areas in the world to build a lasting, developed, and strong economic base.
