China should strengthen its super Computer application-oriented talent pool, said Qian Depei, a team leader of the national 863 program.

The supercomputer research has become the strategic high ground for each country to win technology competition, Qian Depei pointed out. From the supercomputer Milky Way One to the supercomputer Sunway Blue Light, China's supercomputers continue to make breakthroughs. However, China lags behind the United States, Japan and other developed countries in terms of the applications and relevant talents education. For example, less than 10 percent of the supercomputer funding in China goes on the development of application software, as compared to 30 percent in the United States. Due to the application bottlenecks, supercomputer resources are not being made best use of in the social, scientific research and production.

Qian Depei suggested that China should further promote the national long term and middle term strategic planning, policy preferences, and capital investment to increase promotion of supercomputer application development, strengthening personnel training. Universities, research institutes are encourage to widely open supercomputing applications courses to enhance the awareness and skills of the students to stimulate college students' interest in supercomputer development and application.
