The Hong Kong Education Bureau said on Nov. 28 that it welcomed a new education policy that allows 63 Chinese mainland universities to enroll some Hong Kong students without entrance exams.

These Chinese mainland universities will select outstanding Hong Kong students based on the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination and the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination.

The Chinese Ministry of Education released the "Notice on Chinese Mainland Universities' Enrollment of Hong Kong Students without Entrance Exams in 2012" on Nov. 28.

The 63 universities are in 11 provinces and municipalities, including 17 in Guangdong and nine in Beijing. Hong Kong students can apply in February 2012, and each student can select at most four majors at each of four universities.

An official from the education bureau said that this will not only provide Hong Kong students with more university education options and reduce pressure on university entrance exams but it will also help them to develop their careers on the Chinese mainland.
