Scientists discover faults in neutrino particle flight readings

11:21, June 09, 2012

GENEVA, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Scientists from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) on Friday said the observation of super light-speed Neutrino particles were previously flawed due to wiring problems.

Presenting new findings at the 25th International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics in Kyoto, Japan, CERN research director Sergio Bertolucci said four experiments conducted at Gran Sasso, Italy, conclude that a neutrino's time of flight consistent with the speed of light.

These results are at odds with the measurements of the OPERA experiment conducted in September. The scientists attributed the disparity to a faulty element in OPERA's fiber optic timing system.

Bertolucci said although the new findings are "not as exciting as some would have liked, it is what we all expected deep down."

"An unexpected result was put up for scrutiny, thoroughly investigated and resolved in part thanks to collaboration between normally competing experiments," he added.

Last September, the OPERA collaboration declared that based on the observation of over 15,000 neutrino particles, it appeared that the neutrinos travel at a velocity 20 parts per million, faster than the speed of light.
