International digital telecommunication meeting opens in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, March 30 (Xinhua) -- An international meeting called " digital telecommunications development prospects" kicked off in Kyrgyzstan on Friday.

Over 30 government representatives and experts from seven countries, including China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Georgia, the United States gathered in the beautiful Issyk-Kul lake-side town Cholpon-Ata, discussing the future development of the terrestrial digital transmission standards and its industrialization.

The head of the Chinese delegation, deputy director of Institute of Digital Media Technology of Peking University, Huang Tiejun, delivered a report at the meeting called "AVS -- the Video Coding Standard and its industrialization and deployments," which showed a vivid picture of the Chinese AVS Video Coding Standard's advantage than other standards such as MPEG-2. Huang's report received common recognition and praises from the international experts of the meeting.

Director of the international switching center of Tajikistan's national telecommunications company Khonboyev Zafar told Xinhua that Professor Huang and other expert's report is very interesting and convincing, and he is willing to recommend the Chinese ground digital transmission technology to Tajikistan.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecommunication Standardization Bureau Director Johnson Malcolm said the transition of the digital television technology needs regional countries in close cooperation and communication, which has proved the importance of this round table meeting.
