China has independently developed high-precision and high-resolution crustal movement monitoring network which has passed the acceptance test by a select committee under the National Development and Reform Commission.

The network covers the entire Chinese mainland, and comprises 260 regular observing stations and 2,000 irregular ones. Scientists use satellites and underground equipment, which are like medical clips used for electrocardiographic recordings, to monitor the movement of the Earth’s crust and predict earthquakes.

This multi-purpose, open, and shared network joins America’s Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO) and Japan’s GeoNet as the world’s most advanced crustal movement monitoring networks, the committee said.
