After a three-month trial run, the Sunway BlueLight, the first Chinese supercomputer which is built with independent-developed microprocessors and systems, began operation at the National Supercomputer Center in Jinan.

The supercomputer is capable of performing 1,000 trillion calculations per second, making China the third country in the world to produce such a high-performance supercomputer with independent-developed processors, only after the United States and Japan.

The Sunway BlueLight marks China's mastery of the core technologies for large-scale crucial information equipment, and a great technological leap for the country's independent development and utilization of high-performance computers.

The supercomputer was developed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering and Technology, which was established in 1992 and has long been dedicated to the development of high-performance computers and research on parallel algorithms.

The Sunway-series high-performance computers developed by the center have been widely used in key sectors of the country's economy.
