The Beijing work meeting of the Human Variome Project (HVP) was closed on Dec. 12, in which reporters learned that China has officially become a core member of the HVP.

According to its website, the Human Variome Project defines itself as a "global initiative to collect and curate all human genetic variation affecting human health."

At this meeting, health officials and experts from the United States, Britain and more than 30 more countries and regions discussed the cooperation between China and HVP on issues including the priority project type, a unified standard, the applications scale of the international gene/disease database and so on.

The HVP is multinational, and its ultimate goal is to collect information on genetic variation and practice in clinic for reducing the cost of genetic disease diagnosis and achieving efficient therapeutic targets.
