Beijing, Nov.17 (People's Daily Online) --According to an annual report published on Nov.14 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), China has taken great strides to narrow the gap between developed and developing countries in innovation.

According to the report, Global research and development investment doubled from 1993 to 2009, with 70 percent of investments coming from high-income countries. Meanwhile, research investments from low- and middle-income countries increased by 13 percent. China alone accounted for 10 percent of the increase, making it the world's second largest research spender in 2009.

China led the world in patent applications with more than 2,300, while the total number of global applications was 15,000 in 2010. For public research institutions, China and India account for 78 percent of all the patent applications of the low- and middle-income countries.

The 2011 edition focuses on the "Changing Face of Innovation" and describes key trends in the global innovation landscape, including how the innovation process has become more open, collaborative and international. The report said that intellectual property has become the core for the development of global innovation enterprises.
