Beijing, Nov.9 (People's Daily Online) --The China High-Yielding Hybrid Rice Demonstration Project has developed the capability to more than double the yield of rice paddies in Indonesia, according to results recently revealed at a meeting held in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia.

The paddy fields planted with a specifically developed hybrid rice variety produced nearly 12.2 tons of rice per hectare, much higher than Indonesia's average rice yield of 5.1 tons per hectare. After visiting the paddy fields and tasting the rice, all local agricultural officials, representatives of local agricultural enterprises as well as farmers praised China's hybrid rice and expressed hope that the rice variety can be planted in South Sulawesi on a large scale.

The China-Indonesia Hybrid Rice Cooperative Project is funded by the Ministry of Commerce of China and jointly implemented by the China Yuan Longping High-Tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. and the Indonesian National Academy of Agriculture.

The project is aimed at helping Indonesia develop hybrid rice technology, increasing its rice yield, carrying out further agricultural cooperation and exchange based on the principle of good neighborly relations and mutual benefit, and jointly making contributions toward strengthening the food supply capability of the Asia-Pacific Region, eliminating poverty and promoting the peace of the region and the world.

The project entered the implementation stage on May 1, 2010, and the stage covers: joint scientific research, popularization and technical training in the cultivation of hybrid rice, and the localization of the hybrid rice seed, technology and technicians in Indonesia.

Indonesia is the world's fourth largest country by population, and rice is the staple of its people. Limited by factors such as seeds, technology and farm management, the rice yield per unit of Indonesia has long been low. Indonesia hopes that its cooperation with China will carve out a new road for its large-scale planting of high-yield rice.
