Beijing, Nov.7 (People's Daily Online) -- The central government has approved subsequent manned space development programs, and China will carry out about 20 manned space flights in the future, said Wu Ping, spokesperson for the China Manned Space Engineering Program.

In other words, China will accomplish the second step of its three-step manned space development strategy and build its own space laboratory by 2016. By 2020, China will have built a manned space station.

"China carried out only one rendezvous and docking mission in 2011 and will carry out two rendezvous and docking flights in 2012. After 2012, China's manned space project will enter the stage of building up the space laboratory and space station," Wu said.

In the stage of building the laboratory and station, China will have to tackle many other key technical problem, Wu saids. For example, China will have to overcome problems in the cargo spacecraft propellant re-supply technology, and for this purpose, China will launch the cargo spacecraft.

China will also have to overcome problems in bio-regenerative life support technology and astronaut long-term stay technology. All of these require further space experiments on the part of China.
