Macao is to start generating electricity power from natural gas by the end of 2007, local media reported Friday.
Macao Daily News, the leading local Chinese newspaper, quoted Arnaldo Ernesto dos Santos, director of the Office for the Development of the Energy Sector, as saying that the new power source will help meet the region's increasing electricity needs.
The natural gas will hopefully generate 20 percent of the region's electricity power in the future, the official was cited by the newspaper.
The Chinese mainland will provide the special administrative region with the natural gas for the power generating, he was cited.
The government has also been weighing the feasibility of introducing the natural gas into the household use, according to the newspaper.
The city has a population of 500,000.
