Democracy in China's Internet politics

UPDATED: 16:53, June 21, 2007

An article on China's Internet politics, published recently in the Learning Times newspaper, has aroused much attention on the Internet. The article explains that Internet politics refers to the phenomenon that the public can participate in politics and discuss politics through the Internet; while the politicians can communicate with the public through the internet. It also points out that the Internet has deeply changed the political environment in China and has provided a new method and channel for the development of democratic politics. Thus, it also calls on Chinese leaders to adapt to the development of Internet politics.

This is really a new theme that is worth studying.

It is also worth noticing that Internet politics have been influenced by democracy since it was born, as it is growing in an open and convenient environment that promotes interpersonal communication. It is without a doubt an ideal democratic medium. The healthy development of Internet politics will be of great importance to the development of a socialist democracy. Internet technology seems to provide a natural breeding ground for the development of democratic politics. People like the free, personal and interpersonal communication characteristics of the Internet. They like to express their opinions, exchange ideas and put forward suggestions so as to gain a sense of a new type of democracy. Such direct and comprehensive opinions and suggestions, which represent the ideas of an important group of people, are increasingly becoming an important force behind the impacts on social development and progress.

With the constant development of socialist democratic politics, the influence of opinions has become increasingly important. From high profile to low, from government leaders to ordinary people, it is natural for people to pay more attention to Internet opinions. It is unwise to neglect to keep up with the times, view Internet politics or even ignore opinions on the Internet.

In fact, Internet politics have begun to exert their role in promoting social development. In a huge opinion site on the Internet, the public can participate in political discussions, comment what is right or wrong, and give suggestions. This kind of direct exchange of opinions has greatly broadened people's horizons, expanded their thoughts and improved the quality of their opinions. More and more officials are becoming accustomed to listening to public opinion, understanding the situation, and accepting rational comments and suggestions on the Internet; in order to make the right decisions and promote development. A lot of officials even open their own blogs and directly communicate with the public. This is a good example of the democratic environment of the Internet politics.

Indeed, Internet politics is a fairly new concept. Compared with the true democratic politics, it has its shortcomings. For example, false news and rumors can spread quickly throughout the Internet. It can also disturb the normal order with overly emotional opinions. This is not only a harm to good democratic politics, but also affects social development. Thus, it has become very important to determine how to maintain a good environment for Internet politics, promote its healthy development, and maximize its role in helping to promote national democracy.

People should note that developing Internet politics well will enrich the development of socialist democratic politics. However, it does not represent all people yet. Only by comprehensively and objectively mastering Internet politics, and rationally understanding it, can we better promote its development.
