Taliban captures Afghan district
font size

Taliban militants occupied a district in Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan, officials confirmed Tuesday.

A purported Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said Taliban fighters overran Mianashin district on Monday night after inflicting casualties on local police.

Spokesman of Interior Ministry Zamarai Bashari told Xinhua that Afghan forces had retreated from the district, but would launch an operation to regain it soon.

Meanwhile, police chief of Kandahar province Asmatullah Alizai termed the retreat as "a tactical vacation."

Kandahar has been a hotbed of Taliban militants, who clash with government and foreign forces frequently.

Taliban militants briefly captured Yahya Khil district in the eastern Paktika province on Sunday.
