font size

Prime ministers of Poland and Estonia Jaroslaw Kaczynski and Andrus Ansip opted Wednesday for strengthening Polish-Estonian relations and the European Union.

The two leaders told reporters after the meeting that their two countries "are tangibly getting closer to each other," stressing the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Kaczynski said the talks also centered on EU affairs. Both countries opt for a stronger and more effective union, he added.

Ansip said he believes in the feasibility of reaching a "political accord" on the EU Constitutional Treaty at the forthcoming EU summit in Brussels.

He recalled Estonia had ratified the treaty guided by the belief that it would strengthen the EU.

Buth the Estonian prime minister said: "We have to understand reasons of countries that said 'no' to the EU Treaty or that still hesitate."

During the EU summit scheduled for June 21-22, EU states leaders are to adopt a mandate on the opening of the Inter- Governmental Conference that, according to the desire of Germany that ends its EU presidency in June as well as the wish of the European Commission and European Parliament, should adopt the new EU treaty by the end of 2007. Poland still sticks to the square root vote counting system in the EU.
